Guangzhou travel guide for first-time visitors
Guangzhou is GoGo China Trip’s home base and the best starting point for travelers who want a practical, friendly introduction to southern China. It is a food city, a business hub, a Canton Fair gateway, and a comfortable first stop if you want local help with arrival, transport, payments, and day-by-day planning.
If this is your first trip to China, Guangzhou gives you a soft landing: international flights, useful metro connections, relaxed neighborhoods, excellent food, and easy links to Shenzhen, Hong Kong, Foshan, Guilin, and other southern China stops.
Why start your China trip in Guangzhou?
- It is one of China’s easiest southern gateway cities, with Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport serving many international routes.
- The city works well for short stays, Canton Fair trips, food-focused visits, and wider Guangdong itineraries.
- Visitors can enjoy dim sum, old Xiguan neighborhoods, Shamian Island, Canton Tower, Pearl River night views, and modern Tianhe in one compact stay.
- Local support is especially useful here because payment apps, taxi apps, train stations, and business districts can feel unfamiliar on arrival.
Airport arrival: Guangzhou Baiyun to the city
Most international visitors arrive at Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport. For many travelers, the easiest options are a pre-arranged airport pickup, the metro, or an official taxi. The metro is useful if you travel light and your hotel is near a station. A private pickup is better after a long-haul flight, late arrival, family trip, business trip, or Canton Fair visit with luggage.
- Private pickup: best for a smooth first landing, hotel drop-off, and help if your flight is delayed.
- Metro: good for light luggage and central areas connected to Line 3 or easy transfers.
- Taxi / ride-hailing: useful, but payment setup and destination communication can be harder for first-time visitors.

How many days should you stay?
- 1 day: airport stopover, food walk, Shamian Island, Pearl River evening view.
- 2 days: classic Guangzhou highlights, dim sum, old city neighborhoods, Canton Tower area, and local markets.
- 3 days: a calmer first China landing with time for food, culture, shopping, business support, or a Foshan / Shenzhen add-on.
- 4+ days: best for Canton Fair, supplier visits, family travel, or combining Guangzhou with nearby cities.
First-time visitor essentials
- Set up Alipay and/or WeChat Pay before arrival, then keep a small amount of cash and an international card as backup.
- Install a translation app, a map app that works in China, and your airline / hotel apps before your flight.
- Keep your passport with you for hotels, trains, major attractions, and some ticket checks.
- Share your hotel name in Chinese with your driver or guide; English names are not always enough.
- Avoid planning too many cities in one short trip. Guangzhou is a strong first base before moving north, east, or west.
Best Guangzhou experiences
- Cantonese food and dim sum: tea houses, roast goose, wonton noodles, claypot rice, and neighborhood snacks.
- Old Guangzhou: Xiguan streets, Yongqing Fang, Liwan Lake, Chen Clan Ancestral Hall, and Shamian Island.
- Modern city views: Canton Tower, Huacheng Square, Zhujiang New Town, and Pearl River night cruises.
- Shopping and business: wholesale markets, Canton Fair areas, Tianhe malls, and supplier visit support.
